How the Charity Chart came to be

The charity chart has been a work in progress for 2 years now. Originally it was designed to create a million dollar charity trust fund that would fund my friend’s orphanage in Africa. Unfortunately no one donated. It shouldn’t have been much surprise as each block cost $100, and the website didn’t receive much traffic. This entire domain then sat unused and unvisited for almost an entire year. Now a new problem has arisen and I’m taking a second look at this!

Housing for those saving for a mission.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You may have heard of it as the Mormon church. We believe that young men should go out and serve the Lord for 2 years, and they do this on their own dime. Often that means some young men have to save for years before being able to go, while others have family that can support them. The goal of the Charity Chart is to raise enough money to house those young men living on their own and saving for a mission. Rent up in Alberta is very expensive. Just a small basement suit will cost $600-$800. The average wage that those in my singles branch (a congregation of single youth and students) is $12-14/hr. By providing free housing to those saving to serve the Lord, they will be able to leave much sooner, and have less of a burden with living expenses.

Why this idea came to me

Yesterday (Near the end of November 2011) I found myself in a bad situation. The place I am living in will no longer going to be a safe place for someone with strong morals. I have a month and a half to find a place to live. I’ve been saving for several years to buy a house, but I’m still not to the point where that is possible. I ALMOST have enough for a down payment, but not enough to still keep my emergency fund and have affordable monthly payments. Last night I was thinking very hard about what to do. I prayed to my Father in Heaven and asked him for inspiration on how to go about housing. As I prayed the hymn lyrics came into my head “Because I have been given much I too must give”. It hit me. How can I pray for a $150-200,000 blessing if I’m going to keep it all to myself. In the middle of that prayer I got up and started to type up what I would do  if God blessed me with this.

If I can buy I home without debt, then I will house those young men preparing to go on a mission for free. If I move, then I will rent it to the single adults for ridiculously low rent (enough to cover property taxes, etc) or for free provided they keep the commandments of God.

If this project actually works, a 10ft by 10ft version of the charity chart grid will be posted on the wall to remind those living there of the generosity of the people and companies that are supporting them. The webpage chart will remain on this site to remind others what we can’t do along we can do with the help of a stranger.

That happened last night (Nov 21st, 2011). Now my job is to work as hard as I can to come up with enough of a down payment to lower my monthly payment to $800. I’ll also be looking for a very low priced fixer-uper with 3 or 4 bedrooms. :)

What’s in it for you?

Besides the obvious advantage of supporting a great project and feeling great, the Charity Chart offers several opportunities. Here are just a few:

  • Increase your web presence. A link on this website can help increase your rank. It will drive curious customers to your website and can bring sales that otherwise wouldn’t have been made. Your image and link can potentially be viewed by millions of people each year!
  • Make money! You can link affiliate pages that will pay you money every time someone buys something from the link. Places such as Amazon.com and Clickbank.com (and many others) will pay you lots of money for referring customers to them. In fact, it is highly possible that buying one square on the Charity Chart can make you tons of cash!

How much does it cost?

I’ve made the price $25. If you want to donate less you can do that by sending money through paypal to michael@milliondollargoal.net or by clicking this donate link. You won’t get to pick an image on the chart, but once the cumulative amount from other people reaches $25 a square will get filled in on the chart. You can click here to buy a block and advertise your site. You can then link to your block or just leave it blank for a secret donation.
